At a minimum the mine is separated from the Lake Gatun watershed by the Rio Caimito and the Cocle del Norte River. So the mine isn’t in the Lake Gatun Watershed. It isn’t using water that would be going to the canal. It is using water that would otherwise end up in the Rio Caimito and sent out to sea. I would imagine the reason the article fails to mention the danger to Lake Gatun is because it would be factually incorrect to do so.
