Congo offers US, Europe minerals in exchange for peace

In a bold diplomatic move, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Felix Tshisekedi has reportedly proposed granting the United States and Europe access to the country鈥檚 vast mineral resources 鈥 on the condition that they intervene to end the ongoing conflict ravaging the nation.
Speaking on Sunday, Presidential Spokesperson Tina Salama to “directly buy critical minerals” from Kinshasa rather than sourcing “looted” and “smuggled” resources through Rwanda. She extended the same appeal to Europe and other buyers, emphasizing that the DRC is the “true owner” of these valuable commodities.
鈥淪etting the record straight: President Tshisekedi invites the USA, whose companies source strategic raw materials from Rwanda, materials that are looted from the DRC and smuggled to Rwanda while our populations are massacred, to purchase them directly from us the rightful owners,” Salama said in .
She was reacting to an interview to Tshisekedi over the weekend. The story described Tshisekedi saying the Trump administration had shown interest in receiving DRC鈥檚 minerals but the DRC leader wasn鈥檛 directly quoted offering minerals to the US for peace.
Mineral deal?
According to the NYT, Tshisekedi did not rule out a potential minerals deal, allegedly stating that such an agreement would bring more security and stability to his country.
Tshisekedi’s reported offer comes just days after the US imposed sanctions on James Kabarebe, a Rwandan military officer and former Minister of Defence. The US Treasury identified Kabarebe as , a rebel group led by ethnic Tutsis that has seized key towns in eastern DRC, including the major city of Goma.
The group has previously threatened to push toward the capital, Kinshasa, though analysts consider this unlikely given the vast distance of 2,600 kilometers.
With sanctions imposed on Rwanda and on M23, 鈥渟ourcing raw materials also known as conflict minerals from Rwanda will become increasingly compromising and complicated,鈥 Salama wrote.
China currently has greater access to Congo鈥檚 mineral wealth than the US, while the European Union . Last year, the EU agreed to provide Rwanda with approximately $935 million in exchange for minerals such as tin, tungsten, and gold.
EU foreign ministers and failed to reach a consensus on immediate sanctions against Rwanda for its alleged involvement in the conflict. The bloc has, however, signalled a possible reassessment of .
鈥淲e have urged Rwanda to withdraw its troops, and the Memorandum of Understanding regarding critical raw materials will be under review,鈥 the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, .
Belgium, DRC鈥檚 former colonial ruler, signed a separate agreement with the African nation in February 2023 as part of the EU鈥檚 broader efforts to secure critical mineral supplies. That deal described Rwanda as a “major player” in the global extraction of tantalum, tin, tungsten, and gold, while also noting the country鈥檚 “potential” in lithium and rare earth mining.
Mineral loot
Congo and multiple United Nations reports have accused Rwanda of using the unrest as a way of looting Congolese minerals and metals, such as gold, copper, cobalt and coltan 鈥 essential for manufacturing high-tech devices and electric vehicle batteries.
The M23 rebel group has reportedly seized several lucrative mining regions, and a UN expert report in December stated that around 120 tonnes of coltan were being smuggled into Rwanda every month.
The report also pointed to a sharp rise in Rwanda鈥檚 mineral exports, much of which is suspected to originate from the DRC. Rwanda has consistently denied allegations of mineral exploitation.

The DRC remains the world鈥檚 largest cobalt producer, with 220,000 metric tons of the metal mined last year, data from the US Geological Survey .
Nearly 70% of the world’s tantalum, which is extracted from coltan, comes from DRC and neighbouring Rwanda. The volatile eastern region of the country is also home to vast deposits of tin and tungsten.
The country also has vast sources of coltan. The mining of the metal has been linked to “large-scale environmental damage, human rights abuses, violence and death鈥. Reports indicate that child labour is widely used in hazardous mining conditions, further deepening concerns about ethical sourcing.

This is both exciting and dangerous:
It could be seen as carte blanche by US warhawks to engage in ‘nation-building’ while jilting China and improving national security supply lines against the PRC’s stranglehold on rare-earth minerals. At the same time, if the situation is ignored or mishandled, it could lead not only to supply line disruption but further destabilization, which would be bad for both western and asian interests.
The shrewdest move would be for NATO to open temporary relations with DRC in order to quell unrest and secure stable supplies of its specialized mineral assets. Whether or not that or a similar move will be made is a shot in the dark.
I Will still pray and request Respected President of Drcongo that please instead of selling or proposing raw cobalt or any mining goods
Invited investors to have their manufacturing companies in Drcongo and give stability to the country
Brothers and sisters have right to live nice and beautiful life who always been in horrible environment and painful too
Selling and getting peace is not the solution enough
Inviting Indian European United States of America investors to built factories and manufacture things there let’s them help to built beautiful Drcongo
Any mining things should not go in raw or in any forms
Only manufacturing way
Congolese brothers and sisters are tired and now we all should work together to let them have wonderful life

For my own view, I think thiseked and his government have done a big mistake. We should remember that the military weapons used by M 23 comes from Europe especially USA. How come possibly that are willingly to solve this conflict? Instead they will press conditions that will make war endless while knowing that they benefit by this mineral contact. To solve the problem means to end up the mineral contract. Because after solving conflict then where are they going mineral again? Logically is not true because it contradict itself

Where is African Union as Africa is being sold to the West. This does not make sence
Africa is walking itself back to slavery, whilst lives were lost fighting for Africa independence. How did the countries who chased the French and taken back all it’s Minerals Resources rights do it why can’t DRC follow the same template.
The AU is a disgrace. It should.just be disbanded. Why should the DRC go all the way to Europe and America to look for security when we have our own? When will Africa wean itself f.rom dependance on the West? And we call ourselves “Independent”.
I feel like Africa is not United.

This Mineral Looting is the ONLY reason for the unrest in the DRC, since Laurent Kabila’s invasion. Nobody needs a Fortune Teller to know that all that glitters in Rwanda is from The Congo!

The West kis Long overdue in legally 鈿 addressing the mineral and security plight of Congo because it’s Leaders decided to liaise with Non-Aligned Marxist Movement of Russia, China 馃嚚馃嚦 and North Korea, that offered no security guarantee to the social economy but instead time and again assassinated the Zaire, Democratic Republic of Congo and neighbouring national democratic presidential elected presidents.
Russia 馃嚪馃嚭 is the greatest cause of insecurities in Africa by liaising with on-purpose criminal squads like M23 Marxist Bandits/Robbers proxies in Uganda 馃嚭馃嚞 , Rwanda 馃嚪馃嚰 , Tanzania 馃嚬馃嚳 馃嚢馃嚜, Ethiopia 馃嚜馃嚬 etcetera.

Like seriously??
The president thinks by exchanging all the minerals he’ll buy peace??? When will this madness end in some African countries???
Don’t give them nothing because they already robbed us from a most of everything
Agaba Asaph
This is a total madness of highest order. How can a president give away government’s resources in exchange of peace. This is how African leaders sale Africa. Instead of negotiating with his fellow Africans, when will Africa learn to be independent and solve it’s problems.

US and Europe should stop arming M23 through Rwanda. Peace is required in eastern DRC.

The enormous distances in the Congo did not stop Kabila Senior from marching the Banyemelenge to Kinshasa in the early 1990s. Tin also reaches Rwanda from Uganda. I was at the Mwirasandu Tin project about 5 – 6 hours south-west of Kampala, close to the Rwandan border. The locals we were involved with were exporting their artisanal tin to Rwanda. I assume because of receiving dollars and paying zero tax.

Let each and every Country struggle for the marketing of their Natural resource at their own pricing policies not a middle mans deal.

How will the USA and EU end conflict? Is it by killing the M23 as Congolese people or helping the negotiation process btn government and The M23

That’s exactly why the war was taking so long, enemies were being funded by the same people who are offering to help.
