Cheap natural gas along with ever dropping costs for renewables is making coal obsolete. Costs less to build a natural gas plant from scratch than to maintain 40 to 50 year old coal plants. Eventually renewables will make natural gas and nukes obsolete. Climate change aside coal produces particulate matter which causes respiratory disease and early deaths. It also spews out lead mercury which poisons people and lowers the IQ of the nation as a whole. Other than leaded aviation fuel for general aviation coal power is the only sector allowed to pump lead into the atmosphere. The most pro environment, pro education and pro law and order program would be to clean up lead residues in the environment and phase out coal.

The rest of the world builds ultra-supercitical steam cycle boilers that are roughly 30% more efficient than old conventional steam cycle boilers. That means 30% less CO2 from coal.

But not in the USA.

Now that’s “progressive”.
