In Peru, Colombia, none of the towns that have had mining in their territory have seen an improvement in their quality of life. Instead of this, many have seen how the cost of living has increase, labor becomes more expensive which translates in the bankruptcy of other non-mining businesses; resources become more expensive and less available; and the many environmental effects of mining: Acid mine drainage, long term sludge disposal, loss of biodiversity. Change in the uses of land.. plus the violence it calls in these nations, where extreme left and right illegally armed groups want a share of the business, and end-up blackmailing other business: “the militarization of the regions”
